Budi Luhur History

Being intelligent (“cerdas”) and noble (berbudi luhur) are connected, they are inseparable. Intelligence without  noble values will tend to be used to fool, manipulate and harm others, on the other hand, noble values without intelligence would lead to being oppresed and victimised by others..

To educate such intelligent and noble valued people,  Budi Luhur Academy of Computer Sciences (AIK: Akademi Ilmu Komputer Budi Luhur) was established on  April 1, 1979 on Jl Budi Utomo.No. 11 Central Jakarta. The aim of the academy is to produce skillful and professional workers in the computer industry to meet the needs of national development.

After struggling for two years , AIK Budi Luhur received it’s operational permit from the government on 11 August 1981. In the operational permit, the government changed the name of AIK Budi Luhur into  Budi Luhur Academy of Computer Science (APK Budi Luhur: Akademi Pengetahuan Komputer Budi Luhur) and was formally registered on January 5, 1983 by Mendikbud (Ministry of Education) by Ministerial Decree No, APK 018/O/1983. With it’s newly registered status, APK Budi Luhur successfully commenced the baccalaureate exams with the examiners  from ITB. Through that state exam, APK Budi Luhur produced Indonesia’s first computer baccalaureates.

Entering the first phase of the campus construction (consisting of two two-storey building units), on 17 August 1985, APK Budi Luhur moved from Jl. Budi Utomo No. 11 to Jl. Cileduk Raya, North Petukangan, Kebayoran Lama.

With the steadiness of APK Budi Luhur, and the growth of interest and need on the computer experts, Budi Luhur established  Budi Luhur Academy of Computer Electrical Engineering (ATEK Budi Luhur: Akademi Teknik Elektro Komputer Budi Luhur) and  Budi Luhur Academy of Accounting (AAK: Akademi Akuntansi Budi Luhur) in August 1985. The purpose of ATEK Budi Luhur is to prepare  graduates who are able to be responsible to hold positions and tasks which require knowledge of  computer electrical engineering, while AAK Budi Luhur aims to prepare graduates who are qualified for the positions and tasks that require accounting and computer knowledge.

With the progress achieved by APK Budi Luhur, the government raised the accreditation status of the institution from registered (“terdaftar”) status to acknowledged (“diakui”) status based on the Mendikbud Decree (Ministry of Education) no. 0355/I/1986  on May 13, 1986. The new acquired status resulted in another name change from APK Budi Luhur to Akademik Manajemen Informatika dan Komputer Budi Luhur (AMIK/ Budi Luhur Computer and Informatics Management Academy).

With the increase of public demand and attention in computer science, as well as the demand from computer diploma recipients in further continuing  their education to the undergraduate level (S1/ Strata 1), Budi Luhur Aacademy of Ccomputer Science (STPK: Sekolah Tinggi Pengetahuan Komputer Budi Luhur) was established in the second semester of the 1985-1986 academic year.

With the developments  achieved by STPK Budi Luhur and with the support of various parties, in 1986 Budi Luhur established  the Academy of Computer Electro (STEK Budi Luhur: Sekolah Tinggi Elektro Komputer Budi Luhur) and Academy of  Computerised Accounting (STAK Budi Luhur: Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Komputer Budi Luhur) to organize undergraduate programs (S1) in each field.

In early 1987, the Budi Luhur Education Foundation (Yayasan Pendidikan Budi Luhur) viewed that an institutional change is needed to bind the academies within the Foundation (STPK, STEK, and STAK Budi Luhur) into one body. Therefore , based on the Ministry of Education Decree (Keputusan Mendikbud) no. 0720/I/1987, STPK, STEK, and STAK Budi Luhur were integrated into Budi Luhur Academy of Informatics Management and Computer (STMIK Budi Luhur) offering majors and study programs as follows:

  1. Informatics Management major, with study programs :
    a. Informatics Management (D-III in “acknowledged” status / “diakui” and S-1 in “registered” status/ “terdaftar”).
    b. Computerised Accounting (D-III and S1 in “registered” status / “terdaftar”).
  2. Informatics Engineering major with study program Informatics Engineering (S-1 in “registered” status / “terdaftar”).
  3. Computer Engineering major with study program Computer Engineering (D III and S-1 in “registered” status / Terdaftar).

Spurred by the desire to improve the services provided to students taking Computerised Accounting , The Budi Luhur Education Foundation through  the Chairman of the Foundation’s Decree no. 343/KBYL/XI/1989 on 30 November 1989, the study program of Computerised accounting in Informatics Management major was upgraded to Computerised Accounting major.

In efforts of business diversification and related to the construction of Units III and IV , on 1 April 1997, Budi Luhur Education Foundation established the Budi Luhur Academy of Economics (STIE Budi Luhur: Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi Budi Luhur). A year later after the construction of unit V building, on 1 April 1998, the Budi Luhur academy of Engineering (STT Budi Luhur: Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Budi Luhur) was established.  On  1 April 1999,  Budi Luhur Academy of Engineering (STT) was established after the construction of Unit VI building was completed. To make it more efficient, the four existing academies (STMIK, STIE, STISIP, STT) were integrated into Budi Luhur University, according to Ministry of National Education Decree no. 144/D/0 / 2002 on 7 June 2002.

Globalisation and the prolonged crisis has led to a tight competition in search of professional labourers. Therefore, we need to equip ourselves with academic and practical skills to be a tough workforce that   survives  the competition, especially in  developing careers.

Thus Budi Luhur University opens the opportunity to gain knowledge in Information Technology, Economics, Social and Politics, Communication and Science which until this day is still among the top choices to enhance careers.
